An Empty Well…for His
Will
John 2:1-3 “On the
third day there was a wedding at Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was
there. Jesus also was invited with His disciples to the wedding. And when the
wine was all gone; the mother of Jesus said to Him, they have no more wine”At the marriage in Cana, the host of the celebration ran out of wine. But, Jesus was present. He was invited to the wedding. He was there to perform (water into wine) the first miracle. What stood out to me in this story is the presence of Christ. He is a very present help in the time of need. He is always on the scene and wants to be our present help. Psalm 34:1 “God is our Refuge and Strength, a very present and well-proved help in trouble.”
However, before Jesus could help with the best wine, the old wine had to run out. The old wine (law) is a type of our strength. We cannot have victory in our own strength. As long as one is under the law, one will be ruled by sin. The law keeps one doing busy works and always trying in their own efforts.
A life under the law is where human efforts are in vain, yet one continues trying to make things work out… But, it is useless. Useless efforts will never help anyone. It will lead to a dry useless empty pot that needs (the best wine) to be filled with new wine. Therefore; it is needful to empty ourselves (willingly) of all plans, hopes, dreams etc. It is only until we “run” out of wine (efforts) that Jesus can perform, or rather pour the new wine into our lives. Luke 5:37 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed”.
On a personal note, all the trying circumstances, frustrations, disappointments, and heartaches that we go through are meant by God to bring the strength of our self to an empty life. I worship today by declaring…” that I'm desiring to be an empty well to be filled with the Lord's awesome and mighty will.
